Fundraising Initiative: Public Release of “War Is Over!” Animated Short Film for War Child Charity
Public Release of “War Is Over!” Aims to Support War Child Charity
December 1, 2023 — In a heartfelt initiative to raise funds for children affected by armed conflict, the independent animated short film War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John and Yoko has been made publicly available for the first time. Directed by Dave Mullins, this poignant 11-minute film draws inspiration from John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s iconic anti-war anthem, Happy Xmas (War Is Over).
Set against the backdrop of an alternate First World War, the film follows a messenger pigeon tasked with delivering communications between two soldiers on opposing sides. Unbeknownst to each other, the soldiers engage in a correspondence chess game, exchanging moves through the bird. This unique narrative device serves as a powerful metaphor for shared humanity amid the chaos of war, emphasizing connection and understanding even in the darkest of times.
The film has already garnered significant acclaim, winning the Annie Award for Best Animated Short Subject in February 2024, followed by the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film the next month. Its release not only showcases Mullins’s artistic vision but also aims to shine a light on the urgent needs of children living in conflict zones.
War Child, the charity benefitting from this initiative, has highlighted the dire circumstances faced by young people in areas such as Gaza, Lebanon, Sudan, and Ukraine. Many children in these regions experience extreme trauma, losing their homes, education, and sense of safety. War Child’s local teams provide essential supplies and mental health support, but the organization stresses that continued assistance is crucial to meet the overwhelming demand.
In an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone, Sean Ono Lennon, who co-wrote the story with Mullins, explained the film’s inception. Initially seeking a video that transcended a conventional music clip for Happy Xmas (War Is Over), Lennon found Mullins, a former Pixar animator with a knack for storytelling. The collaboration quickly blossomed, leading to the film’s unique premise centered around a chess game played across enemy lines, facilitated by a messenger pigeon—a nod to historical wartime practices.
The timing of the film’s release is intentional, coinciding with the holiday season. Lennon remarked, “We wanted to do it in time for Christmas because that’s the whole point of the song—the end of the film. It’s ultimately a Christmas song.”
As the world grapples with ongoing conflicts, War Is Over! serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion and connection. Viewers are encouraged to support War Child by donating through the film’s public release, ensuring that children affected by war receive the assistance they desperately need.
