NEW DELHI: World chess champion D Gukesh experienced a delightful moment of levity during the Norway Chess 2026 rest day celebrations on Friday, as fellow players gathered to honor him on his 20th birthday. The festivities took place in Oslo, where the chess community came together before embarking on sailing activities.
The highlight of the celebration came when American Grandmaster Wesley So playfully nudged Javokhir Sindarov, who is set to face Gukesh in the World Championship match this November, to sing a song. The request sent the room into fits of laughter, with Gukesh and Sindarov sharing a moment of uncontrollable giggles amid the playful banter.
Sindarov, although not competing in Norway Chess this year, was present to support his close friend Bibisara Assaubayeva, who currently leads the women’s standings. The light-hearted atmosphere was a welcome reprieve for Gukesh, especially following a challenging day on the chessboard.
Earlier in the tournament, Gukesh faced World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in a closely contested Round 4 match. In other matches, Wesley So triumphed over Alireza Firouzja in an Armageddon showdown after their classical game ended in a draw, while R Praggnanandhaa secured a win against Vincent Keymer in the tiebreaker.
In the women’s competition, all classical games concluded in draws, leading to tense Armageddon matches. Bibisara Assaubayeva continued her impressive run by defeating Ju Wenjun, while Zhu Jiner claimed victory over Koneru Humpy. Anna Muzychuk also emerged victorious against Divya Deshmukh after their drawn classical encounter.
