HUDSON VALLEY, NY — This week, Patch is shining a spotlight on exciting volunteer opportunities in the Lower Hudson Valley, thanks to Volunteer New York! Whether you’re looking to lend a hand or explore a new passion, these initiatives offer a chance to make a difference in your community.
1. Annual Plant Sale
When: May 11-17
Where: Katonah
Organization: Friends of Lasdon Public Gardens
Green thumbs are in high demand for this beloved annual event! Volunteers will assist with sorting, organizing, watering, and grooming plants. On sale days, help shoppers, tally orders, and keep the plants in top shape. Plus, volunteers who contribute at least two hours will receive a $25 discount on their purchase during the sale on May 16 and 17. Learn more here!
2. Intergenerational Chess Pop-Up (Teens Only)
When: May 12, 19, and 26 from 4-6:30 p.m.
Where: White Plains
Organization: DOROT Westchester
Calling all teens! Join this unique three-session event that pairs high school students with adults aged 60+ for a fun game of chess. All skill levels are welcome, and a Chess Master will provide guidance. Snacks will be served, and participants must attend all three sessions. Find out more here!
3. NAMIWalks
When: May 16 from 6-11:30 a.m.
Where: Hartsdale
Organization: NAMI Westchester
Join the largest mental health walk in the Hudson Valley! Volunteers are needed for setup, registration, photography, face painting, and cleanup. Refreshments will be provided, and teens aged 13+ can volunteer as part of an adult’s team. Get involved here!
4. Soul Ryeders Half Marathon and 5K
When: May 16 and 17
Where: Rye
Organization: Soul Ryeders
Help make this fourth annual race a success! Volunteers will receive a T-shirt and can assist with packet distribution, refreshments, course marshaling, and photography. Kids as young as 10 can volunteer with an adult. Sign up here!
5. GARNER Arts Festival
When: May 16 and 17 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Where: Garnerville
Organization: GARNER Arts Center
Celebrate the 25th anniversary of this vibrant arts festival! Volunteers will help with kids’ workshops, gallery exhibitions, and concessions. Enjoy a meal, a GARNER Arts Festival T-shirt, and a free ticket to the opposite day of your shift. Join the fun here!
