R Vaishali Makes History as First Indian Woman to Win FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament

In a groundbreaking achievement for Indian chess, Grandmaster R Vaishali Rameshbabu has become the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament, securing her spot in the prestigious World Chess Championship. The historic victory unfolded in Cyprus, where Vaishali triumphed over Russia’s Kateryna Lagno in a gripping final round.

Vaishali’s decisive win came after Lagno resigned in just 48 moves, unable to counter Vaishali’s commanding position on the board. With her queen and two rooks in dominant form, Vaishali showcased her strategic prowess, sealing her place in chess history.

Entering Round 14 with 7.5 points, Vaishali was in a tense tie for the lead with Uzbek Grandmaster Bibisara Assaubayeva. A win was essential for Vaishali to clinch the title, while a draw could have led to tie-breakers. As fate would have it, Assaubayeva drew her match against Women’s World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh, paving the way for Vaishali to seize the moment—and she did just that.

A Rising Star in Indian Chess

Born in Chennai, Vaishali has long been a formidable presence in the chess world. She first garnered attention by winning the World Youth Chess Championships in both the Under-12 and Under-14 categories. Her accolades continued to accumulate, including titles like the National Junior Girls Championship and the Woman International Master (WIM) title in 2016. By 2023, she had achieved the coveted Grandmaster title, becoming only the third Indian woman to cross the 2500 Elo rating mark.

Vaishali’s contributions extend beyond individual accolades; she played a pivotal role in India’s gold medal victory at the Online Chess Olympiad in 2020 and helped the women’s team secure gold at the Chess Olympiad in 2024. Her impressive performances have made her a key figure in Indian chess, alongside her younger brother, R Praggnanandhaa, with whom she shares the distinction of being the first brother-sister pair to qualify for the Candidates tournaments.

Family Support and Future Aspirations

Vaishali’s journey has been marked by unwavering support from her family, who have stood by her side through every challenge. As she prepares to face reigning world champion Ju Wenjun, the chess community eagerly anticipates her next moves on the global stage.

With her historic win, R Vaishali not only elevates her own career but also inspires a new generation of chess players in India, proving that with determination and skill, the sky is the limit.

As the chess world celebrates this monumental achievement, Vaishali’s name will forever be etched in the annals of history, a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring chess players everywhere.
