Get Ready for the 2026 ChessKid Youth Championships: A Showcase of Tomorrow’s Chess Stars!
Excitement Builds for the 2026 ChessKid Youth Championships
The countdown has begun for the highly anticipated ChessKid Youth Championships 2026, set to showcase the brightest young talents in the chess world. Scheduled for February 21-22 and March 7-8, this year’s event promises thrilling matches in both the Under-13 and Under-16 categories, with a total prize fund of $15,000.
The championships will kick off with the Under-13 division, featuring a fast-paced 3+1 blitz time control format. Following that, the Under-16 section will take the spotlight, where young prodigies will compete in a group round-robin followed by a knockout stage.
This year, the Under-16 field is particularly formidable, with reigning champion GM Andy Woodward returning to defend his title. The American star, who dazzled audiences in 2025, is also the 2025 Chess.com Puzzle Champion, making him a fierce contender.
Joining Woodward is the Turkish sensation GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, who has been making waves in the chess community. At just 14 years old, Erdogmus has already broken multiple records, including being the youngest player to surpass the 2500 and 2600 rating barriers. Praised by chess legend Magnus Carlsen as “the strongest 14-year-old the world has ever seen,” he is a favorite to clinch the title.
Another rising star is IM Faustino Oro, often referred to as the “Messi of chess.” The Argentinian prodigy made headlines in 2025 by becoming the youngest player to cross the 2500 rating threshold and is now on the path to becoming the youngest grandmaster in history.
IM Lu Miaoyi, a 16-year-old from China, is also set to make her mark. With a peak rating of 2452 in 2025, she was the top-ranked girl in the world for much of the year, showcasing her impressive skills on the board.
The Under-13 division will feature standout players like WIM Bodhana Sivanandan, who made history as the youngest player to win the England Women’s Chess Championship in 2023. Her remarkable achievements continue to inspire young chess enthusiasts.
Fans can expect to see other talented players in both categories, including GM Sina Movahed, IMs Henry Edward Tudor, Ryo Chen, and Tani Adewumi, as well as FMs like Sergey Sklokin and Megan Paragua.
