Zhou Jianchao’s Historic 158-Game Unbeaten Streak Comes to an End
Zhou Jianchao’s Historic Unbeaten Streak Ends at 158 Games
In a stunning turn of events, Grandmaster Zhou Jianchao’s remarkable unbeaten streak of 158 classical games came to an end last weekend at the Connecticut Classical tournament. The 37-year-old, who has represented the United States since 2024, achieved the longest known run of consecutive classical games without a loss, a feat that has now etched his name in the annals of chess history.
Zhou’s impressive streak lasted nearly a year, during which he participated in 26 FIDE-rated tournaments, avoiding defeat since his last loss to Andrew Lewis Titus at the Annual Chicago Open on May 23, 2025. His record surpasses the previous benchmark set by GM Bogdan Lalic, who went 155 games unbeaten from 2010 to 2011.
“I didn’t know how many games I had played without losing,” Zhou remarked in an interview with Chess.com. “Mentality is very important. If I had thought about this, it would have affected my performance, and I would have lost a long time ago.”
The streak finally came to a halt in round four of the Connecticut Classical, where Zhou faced GM Francesco Sonis, who ultimately won the tournament. While Sonis’s victory was significant, the chess world is buzzing about the end of Zhou’s extraordinary run.
Chess statistician Stefano Ferraro commented on the rarity of such accomplishments, stating, “Getting to 100+ classical games without losing is incredible; getting close to 160 is historically significant.” Zhou’s opponents during his streak included 26 grandmasters, and he secured victories against notable players like Mahel Boyer and Emilio Cordova.
Despite the impressive numbers, Ferraro noted that Zhou faced a mix of opponents, including many lower-rated players. “He also plays a lot of young, underrated players, so to get this record is still incredibly impressive,” he added.
Zhou’s average opponent rating during the streak was 2298, significantly lower than his own rating of 2581. In contrast, Magnus Carlsen’s legendary 125-game unbeaten streak from 2018 to 2020 is often regarded as the gold standard, as Carlsen faced an average rating of 2745—equivalent to competing against today’s top-15 players in every match.
Reflecting on his streak, Zhou emphasized the importance of preparation and emotional control. “I prepare thoroughly for each game’s opening and have excellent emotional control. The outcome doesn’t affect me much,” he explained. He also acknowledged that his pragmatic approach often led him to simplify games when faced with challenging situations.
Zhou’s journey in chess has been nothing short of remarkable. Originally from China, he became a grandmaster at just 17 and represented his country at the 2010 Chess Olympiad. After relocating to Medford, Massachusetts, in 2024, he has thrived in a more relaxed environment, allowing him to compete in more tournaments.
As the chess community reflects on Zhou Jianchao’s incredible achievement, the question remains: Can anyone reach or surpass his 158-game unbeaten streak? Only time will tell, but for now, Zhou’s name stands tall in the world of chess history.
