Grandmaster Zhu Jiner Calls Out FIDE for Dress Code Fine Disruption at Women’s World Blitz Championship

Title: GM Zhu Jiner Calls Out FIDE for Dress Code Fine Impacting Performance in Women’s World Blitz Championship

GM Zhu Jiner, the world’s 10th highest-rated female player, has spoken out against FIDE for imposing a fine on her for allegedly violating the dress code policy during the 2024 Women’s World Blitz Championship. Zhu claims that the fine disrupted her performance and ultimately led to her elimination from the tournament.

Zhu, a 22-year-old Chinese grandmaster who previously won bronze in the 2023 Women’s World Blitz Championship, reached the knockout stage in 2024 but was knocked out by GM Vaishali Rameshbabu in the Quarterfinals. The controversial incident occurred during her match, where she was informed that her boots violated the dress code and was fined $200.

In an open letter shared with Chess.com, Zhu expressed her frustration with the decision, stating that she followed the official dress code policy and should not have been penalized. She highlighted that the same outfit had been worn in previous tournaments without any objections.

Despite appealing the fine and having it overturned by the Appeals Committee, Zhu remains disappointed with the outcome, emphasizing that the officials’ actions were disrespectful and showed a lack of understanding of the players’ needs and the rules.

FIDE’s General Secretary Lukasz Turlej defended the dress code policy, stating that it aims to promote professionalism among players. FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky acknowledged the need for a dress code at top events but emphasized the importance of fair enforcement.

Zhu’s experience adds to a series of dress code controversies in recent championships, including fines imposed on top players like Magnus Carlsen and Anna-Maja Kazarian. The incidents have sparked debates within the chess community regarding the enforcement and impact of dress code regulations.

As FIDE reassesses its dress code policy for future events, players like Zhu continue to advocate for fair treatment and respect from officials, highlighting the importance of maintaining a balance between professionalism and player comfort.
