Celebrating 40 Years of Chess Excellence: The Frank P. Samford Jr. and Frank Samford III Chess Fellowships Open Applications for 2026

Birmingham, AL — The Frank P. Samford Jr. and Frank Samford III Chess Fellowships are thrilled to announce the launch of their 40th consecutive annual awards, continuing a legacy that has transformed the landscape of American chess. Established in 1987 by the late Frank P. Samford Jr., these fellowships aim to nurture and support the most promising young chess masters in the United States, a mission that has seen over three dozen fellows rise to prominence in the chess world.

Under the stewardship of Frank Samford III, the fellowship has not only honored its founder’s vision but has also played a pivotal role in the careers of many young chess players. Notably, four members of the 2024 bronze medal-winning U.S. Women’s Olympiad team were current or former Samford Fellows, showcasing the program’s impact on the national stage.

The fellowships are open to American chess players under the age of 25 as of June 1, 2026, who have been permanent residents of the U.S. for at least one year prior. Paul Samford, grandson of Frank P. Samford Jr., leads the program alongside Al Lawrence of the U.S. Chess Trust, ensuring that the legacy of excellence continues.

Selected fellows will receive a comprehensive support package valued at $70,000, which includes funding for training with top coaches, chess literature, computer equipment, and opportunities to compete in high-level tournaments. Players can apply multiple times, with a maximum funding cap of $82,000 available over the course of their applications.

The selection process for the 2026 Samford Chess Fellows will be conducted by a distinguished committee comprising Paul Samford, Grandmaster Yury Shulman, and International Master John Donaldson. Applicants must demonstrate exceptional talent, achievement, and a steadfast commitment to chess, with aspirations to become leading grandmasters and potential world championship challengers.
