Super Chess Classic Romania 2026: A Drawn Opening Round Filled with Drama

Super Chess Classic Romania 2026: A Day of Draws Amidst Intense Battles

Bucharest, Romania – The highly anticipated Super Chess Classic Romania 2026 kicked off on Thursday, but the opening round ended in a surprising series of draws, leaving fans and players alike buzzing with what could have been. Despite the lack of decisive results, the games were anything but uneventful, showcasing the fierce competitive spirit of the world’s top chess talents.

In a thrilling encounter, Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja nearly capitalized on a decisive advantage against Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, only to see the game slip into a draw. Meanwhile, GMs Wesley So and Vincent Keymer engaged in a wild clash that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, ultimately resulting in another stalemate.

Anish Giri had his own opportunities to press against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, but a missed chance meant he too had to settle for a draw. In a more subdued match, Jorden van Foreest reluctantly sacrificed a pawn against Fabiano Caruana, leading to yet another shared point. The only game that concluded quietly was between Javokhir Sindarov and Bogdan-Daniel Deac, where a solid opening choice by Deac led to a peaceful resolution.

Round 1 Results

  • Deac ½-½ Sindarov
  • Vachier-Lagrave ½-½ Giri
  • Van Foreest ½-½ Caruana
  • So ½-½ Keymer
  • Praggnanandhaa ½-½ Firouzja

With all games drawn, the standings after Round 1 leave the players neck-and-neck, setting the stage for an exciting second round.

A New Venue and High Stakes

The tournament is being held at the stunning Museum of the National Bank of Romania, a fitting backdrop for such a prestigious event. This year’s prize fund totals $475,000, with $100,000 awarded to the first-place finisher. Additionally, a $125,000 bonus will be distributed based on the number of wins each player secures throughout the tournament.

The Super Chess Classic Romania is the second event in the 2026 Grand Chess Tour, following the Super Rapid & Blitz Poland. With nine tour regulars in attendance, including five who competed in Poland, the competition is fierce. Caruana, a two-time champion in Romania, leads the early standings after finishing second in Poland.

Looking Ahead

As the players prepare for Round 2 on Friday, May 15, at 8:30 a.m. ET, the matchups promise to be thrilling. Notable pairings include Caruana vs. Giri, Sindarov vs. Praggnanandhaa, and the all-French showdown between Firouzja and Vachier-Lagrave.

Fans can expect more intense battles as the players seek to break the draw streak and gain momentum in this high-stakes tournament. With the world watching, the Super Chess Classic Romania is set to deliver more excitement in the days to come.
