Warsaw, Poland — In a thrilling conclusion to the first day of the 2026 Super Rapid & Blitz Poland, Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana delivered a stunning last-round victory over GM Wesley So, who had been leading the tournament. This decisive win left five players tied at the top with four points each after three rounds of intense competition.
The event, which marks the opening of the 2026 Grand Chess Tour, has already showcased some electrifying matches. Alongside Caruana and So, the other players sharing the lead include GM Hans Niemann, who cleverly outmaneuvered World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju in a nail-biting time scramble. Defending Champion GM Vladimir Fedoseev bounced back from an earlier loss with two consecutive wins, while World Championship Challenger Javokhir Sindarov remains undefeated and optimistic, showcasing his resilience in the face of fierce competition.
Trailing just a point behind the leaders are GMs Alireza Firouzja, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, and Gukesh, all of whom are vying for a chance to climb the ranks. Meanwhile, GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave finds himself struggling at 1/6, narrowly avoiding three losses on the first day. In a disappointing turn, GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek sits at the bottom of the standings with 0/6, unable to escape the clutches of defeat.
