Held from April 26 to 28 at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Rangia, the meet celebrated both mental acuity and physical prowess, fostering a spirit of competition and camaraderie among participants.

Inaugurated by Sister B. D’Costa, Principal of Fatima Convent English School, the event kicked off with a colorful march-past featuring contingents from all 106 participating schools. In her opening address, Sister D’Costa emphasized the dual benefits of chess and yoga, stating, “Chess sharpens the mind while yoga strengthens the body.” She encouraged students to embody discipline and fair play throughout the competition.

The meet featured a robust lineup of events, with chess competitions divided into six categories: Under-14, Under-17, and Under-19 for both boys and girls. Meanwhile, yoga events showcased individual, artistic pair, rhythmic pair, and group performances, allowing students to express their skills and creativity.

Anjana, Principal of JNV Rangia, welcomed the gathering and formally declared the meet open. “Trained arbiters and certified yoga judges ensured smooth conduct,” she noted, highlighting the high spirit of competition marked by mutual respect among participants.

As the event progressed, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement and determination. Students displayed remarkable concentration and strategy in chess matches, while yoga performances captivated the audience with grace and precision.

The closing ceremony saw Mridusmita Borah, Co-District Commissioner of Rangia, as the chief guest, alongside Seshanuj Sarkar, Principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya Rangia, as the guest of honor. The event culminated in a vibrant cultural performance and a heartfelt welcome song, celebrating the achievements of all participants.

Top performers were recognized and selected to represent the Shillong Region at the upcoming NVS National Chess & Yoga Meet 2026. Medals, trophies, and certificates were awarded, with overall championship trophies for chess and yoga also presented, marking a fitting conclusion to a memorable event.

The Northeast Regional Chess and Yoga Meet not only showcased the talents of young athletes but also reinforced the importance of sports in building resilience and unity among the youth.
