Overview of the WR Women’s Chess Tour: A Global Tournament Series

Carissa Yip and Leya Garifullina Shine at WR Women’s Chess Tour – Americas 2026

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic — In an electrifying display of skill and strategy, International Masters Carissa Yip and Leya Garifullina emerged victorious in the rapid and blitz segments of the WR Women’s Chess Tour – Americas 2026, held on Wednesday and Thursday. Both players not only secured the coveted $7,000 first prize but also earned their spots in the Grand Final set to take place in Stuttgart, Germany, later this year.

The WR Women’s Chess Tour is a groundbreaking tournament series spanning four continents, featuring a total of four events culminating in a Grand Final. Following the successful kickoff in Tokyo in June and the recent competition in Punta Cana, the next leg will be hosted in Mozambique on August 21-22.

Each tournament leg consists of two days of intense competition: rapid matches on the first day and blitz matches on the second. The format includes an eight-player single-elimination knockout, with rapid games played at a time control of 15+10 and blitz games at 3+2. The winners of each segment earn both prize money and a ticket to the Grand Final.

Yip Dominates Rapid with Unmatched Precision

Carissa Yip showcased her prowess in the rapid segment, sweeping through her matches with a flawless 2-0 record. She first defeated IM Carolina Lujan, followed by Garifullina, and finally IM Deysi Cori in the finals. Yip expressed her initial nerves, stating, “I was honestly nervous in general because I think rapid is like my biggest time control. I just played in Hong Kong, where, yeah, I played awful in the rapid.”

In her quarterfinal match against Lujan, Yip executed a brilliant tactical sequence that led to a swift victory. The semifinal against Garifullina was equally impressive, featuring a strategic exchange sacrifice that left her opponent scrambling. Yip’s final match against Cori was a testament to her defensive skills, as she turned the tables after losing a pawn, ultimately checkmating Cori’s king.

Garifullina Claims Blitz Title with Resilience

Leya Garifullina, on the other hand, demonstrated her blitz mastery by winning all her matches without a single loss. After defeating Alexandra Castillo 2.5-0.5 in the quarterfinals, she faced Yip in a rematch, where she avenged her earlier defeat with a decisive 3-1 victory. Garifullina’s strategic play continued to shine as she overcame Lee in the finals with two wins and two draws, securing her place in the Grand Final.

The blitz final was a nail-biter, with Garifullina managing to create complications for Lee, ultimately leading to her victory. The match featured moments of tension, including a king and pawn endgame where both players overlooked winning moves, showcasing the high stakes and pressure of competitive chess.

Looking Ahead

With two legs of the WR Women’s Chess Tour completed, half of the field for the Grand Final is now set, including previous winners GM Vaishali Rameshbabu and GM Kateryna Lagno. As the tour moves to Mozambique next month, anticipation builds for the next round of fierce competition.

Chess enthusiasts can catch all the action from the WR Women’s Chess Tour – Americas 2026 on the WR Chess YouTube channel or follow the games on the official events page.

Congratulations to Carissa Yip and Leya Garifullina as they prepare to face off once again in Stuttgart this November!
