GM Iniyan Pa Dominates at 360 ONE Masters Chess Tournament
Mumbai, India – Grandmaster Iniyan Pa showcased his exceptional talent in the 7th round of the 360 ONE Global Chess Festival, held at the World Trade Centre, by defeating Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi. This victory marks Iniyan’s sixth win in the Masters Section, propelling him to a commanding lead with 6.5 points as the tournament approaches its final rounds.
With just two rounds remaining in this Swiss League tournament, Iniyan stands 1.5 points ahead of a tightly packed group of five players, including Dalvi, Boris Savchenko, Apoorv Kamble, Harsh Suresh, and Soham Kamotra, all vying for the top spots.
Iniyan’s match against Dalvi was a thrilling encounter, featuring the Nimzo-Indian Defense. Dalvi adopted an aggressive strategy from the outset, pushing his pawns on the King-side and keeping pressure on Iniyan’s defenses. However, a critical misstep on the 18th move allowed Iniyan to seize control of the game. A crafty knight sacrifice turned the tide, leading to a swift checkmate on the 34th turn with the combined forces of his queen and bishop.
In the Challenger section, Viresh Sharnath had been on a winning streak, but his momentum was halted in the 7th round when he was held to a draw by Nithin Babu. Sharnath now shares the lead with 6.5 points, closely followed by six players at 6 points each, keeping the competition fierce and unpredictable.
Top seed Madhvendra Pratap Sharma has faced challenges in the Challengers Category, managing only 5 points due to a series of draws. However, he shines in the Junior Masters, where he leads with 6.5 points, having previously secured victories in the first six rounds before conceding his first draw.
Notable results from the Masters Category included draws between Harsh Suresh and Soham Kamotra, while Boris Savchenko triumphed over IM Ayush Sharma, and Apoorv Kamble defeated GM Andrey Gorovets. GM Luka Paichadze also secured a win against GM Alexei Federov.
In a noteworthy moment, Sri Lankan teen prodigy WIM Oshini Gunawardhana Devindya faced a setback, losing to compatriot IM De Silva LMST. She now requires at least one victory and a draw in the remaining rounds to achieve her WGM norm.
