Nagpur’s Divya Deshmukh Shines at World Rapid Team Championships, Secures Bronze Medal
Hong Kong – In a thrilling conclusion to the FIDE World Rapid Team Championships, Nagpur’s own Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh celebrated a remarkable achievement alongside American chess star Levon Aronian. The 21-year-old prodigy played a pivotal role in securing the bronze medal for the Hexamind Chess Team, which included renowned players like Alireza Firouzja, Anish Giri, and Vidit Gujrathi.
The championship, held in Hong Kong, saw Hexamind finishing strong in the final round, outclassing Birdie and Friends with a score of 3.5-2.5. This victory allowed them to share the top position with eventual champions Dragon Chilling, led by former world champion Ding Liren, and Arjun Erigaisi’s Team MGD1, each team amassing 18 points.
Despite the tie, Hexamind’s tie-break score of 611.5 secured them third place, with Deshmukh contributing significantly by playing seven of the 12 rounds and earning 4.5 points. Her performance included crucial draws against Indian star D Harika and Chinese GM Lei Tingjie, helping her team clinch vital victories in the ninth and tenth rounds.
In a standout moment, Deshmukh held her own against Lei Tingjie, allowing Hexamind to triumph over Dragon Chilling with a decisive 4-2 victory. The celebration that followed with Aronian highlighted the camaraderie and spirit of teamwork that defined their journey.
While Deshmukh basked in her team’s success, fellow Nagpur Grandmaster Raunak Sadhwani, the first Grandmaster from the city, also showcased his talent, leading Team Chessnut Nova on Board 1. Despite not finishing on the podium, Sadhwani delivered a commendable performance, amassing 6.5 points over 12 rounds against some of the world’s best players.
Reflecting on his experience, Sadhwani expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating, “Playing on the top board against such strong opposition is always challenging. I am happy with some of my games, and I could have converted a few better positions.” He emphasized the importance of learning from each match, noting that competing against elite players boosts confidence and motivates him to strive for greater success.
As the tournament concluded, both Deshmukh and Sadhwani emerged as shining examples of Nagpur’s growing prominence in the chess world. Their achievements not only highlight their individual talents but also inspire a new generation of chess enthusiasts in India. With the world watching, the future looks bright for these young Grandmasters.
