The pilot program will kick off in 30 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi, in collaboration with the All India Chess Federation (AICF) and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.

Designed by the AICF, the curriculum will provide students with coaching from trained instructors and teacher-mentors, alongside regular competitions to track their progress. Based on the pilot’s success, CHESS+ is set to expand to more JNVs and Kendriya Vidyalayas nationwide.

Building Skills Through Chess

Beyond the game itself, CHESS+ aims to cultivate essential life skills in students, including critical thinking, problem-solving, concentration, decision-making, and resilience. “Chess teaches patience, humility, strategic thinking, and the ability to learn from both success and failure,” Chaudhary stated. “CHESS+ will bring structured learning into schools, encouraging students to embrace chess not just as a game, but as a lifelong learning experience.”

AICF President Nitin Narang emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “CHESS+ is a crucial step toward identifying and nurturing talent at the grassroots level. AICF is fully committed to offering structured exposure to chess across schools and creating a sustainable foundation for the future.”

Focus on India’s Future Champions

Grandmaster and chess coach Srinath Narayanan also voiced his support for the initiative, sharing his personal journey with chess. “Chess shaped my personal journey by teaching me decision-making, resilience, and confidence. I encourage young students to enjoy the game, stay curious, and make full use of this unique opportunity.”

As India continues to emerge as a global powerhouse in chess, the CHESS+ initiative aims to create a robust pipeline of young talent, making the sport more accessible in schools across the country.
