New Delhi – In a groundbreaking move to integrate strategic thinking into school curricula, the Ministry of Education has unveiled CHESS+ (Championing Excellence in Sport Skills), a pilot initiative designed to weave chess-based learning into the educational fabric of Indian schools. The program has commenced in 30 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) across three states: 13 in Haryana, 15 in Uttar Pradesh, and two in Delhi.
CHESS+ aims to harness the cognitive benefits of chess to bolster students’ critical thinking, concentration, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. By employing a structured training framework, the initiative will not only teach students the intricacies of chess but also enhance their overall academic and personal development.
The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Education, the All India Chess Federation (AICF), and the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. Under this program, trained chess coaches and teacher-mentors will conduct regular sessions, providing students with opportunities to engage in competitions and skill-building activities. A robust monitoring and evaluation system will track the program’s impact on students’ learning outcomes.
The government envisions expanding CHESS+ to more schools, including additional JNVs and Kendriya Vidyalayas, based on the findings from this pilot phase. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes experiential and skill-based learning, aiming to create a more holistic educational environment that fuses sports, logical reasoning, and intellectual growth.
