Alexey Sarana Triumphs in Titled Tuesday with Stellar Performance

June 16, 2023 – In a dazzling display of chess mastery, Grandmaster Alexey Sarana clinched victory in the latest Titled Tuesday tournament, achieving an impressive score of 10.5 out of 11. His only blemish came in a hard-fought draw against world champion Magnus Carlsen during the eighth round. This victory marks Sarana’s second triumph in the tournament within a month, having previously won on May 19.

The tournament kicked off with a competitive field of 16 players, all eager to showcase their skills. Sarana and Carlsen both started strong, each winning their first four matches. By the fifth round, Carlsen faced IM Yoseph Theolifus Taher, where he demonstrated resilience after initially allowing his opponent a chance to win a pawn. Carlsen ultimately secured the victory, finishing the round with a commanding win.

As the rounds progressed, both Sarana and Carlsen continued to dominate. Carlsen’s sixth-round match against GM Christopher Yoo saw him capitalize on an early mistake by Yoo, while Sarana maintained his momentum with a decisive win against IM Renato Terry. By the end of round six, both players stood at 6/6, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown.

The highly anticipated matchup between Sarana and Carlsen in round seven ended in a draw, preventing either player from achieving a perfect score. However, the stakes remained high, with five players trailing closely behind, including Taher and GM Sergey Drygalov.

As the tournament advanced, Sarana pulled ahead after defeating GM David Paravyan, while Carlsen managed to secure a draw against GM Haik Martirosyan. With only one round left, Sarana needed just one more win to secure the championship.

In a dramatic final round, Sarana faced GM Parham Maghsoodloo, where a clever pawn move led to a swift checkmate just four moves later. Meanwhile, Carlsen’s draw with Martirosyan solidified his second-place finish.

Sarana’s stellar performance not only earned him the top prize of $2,500 but also showcased his strategic brilliance, including a remarkable triple tactic involving underpromotion, a fork, and a pin that left spectators in awe.

Final Standings

  1. Alexey Sarana (10.5 points) – $2,500
  2. Magnus Carlsen (9.5 points) – $1,500
  3. S.L. Narayanan (9 points) – $1,000

The tournament’s excitement continues to build, with a perfect score bounty of $750 set to grow by $250 each week until achieved. As Titled Tuesday remains a highlight for chess enthusiasts, all eyes will be on the next tournament to see if anyone can claim that elusive perfect score.
