2026 National Middle School Championships Kick Off with Thrilling Action in Round Rock, Texas

Round Rock, Texas – The 2026 National Middle School Championships commenced yesterday at the Kalahari Resort and Convention Center, drawing 1,274 young chess enthusiasts from across the nation. With fierce competition across six sections, the event has already delivered some surprising upsets and thrilling matches.

Blitz and Bughouse Tournaments

Before the main event, early arrivals had the chance to participate in Thursday’s Blitz and Bughouse tournaments. The duo of Elliott Goodrich and CM Tariq Yue showcased their skills, dominating the Bughouse competition with a perfect score of 10/10. They claimed the title, leaving Trevor Tang and Uther Rodriguez in second place with eight points.

In the K-8 Blitz, FM Ethan Guo and Jashith Karthi shared top honors, both scoring 10/12. Notably, nine-year-old Yuntao Liu, rated at just 1575, finished third with an impressive 9/12, proving that age is just a number in the chess world. In the U1600 Blitz, Texans Tarun Vinayagaram and Inba Siva Sai tied for first, each scoring 10/12.

The Main Event

The main championship is packed with talent, featuring eight masters and 28 experts. Most of the top players navigated the first two rounds without a hitch, but the tournament has already seen its share of upsets. New York’s Somario Blagrove delivered the standout performance of the day with a stunning Round 2 victory over CM Ethan Guo, a match highlighted by expert annotations from WGM Sabina Foisor.

Several other matches on the top Championship boards ended in unexpected draws, including a nail-biting game where Austin Zhao managed to secure a draw against Benjamin Yu. Anish Nalakonda came close to pulling off an upset draw against Maxwell Zang, but Zang ultimately converted a rook and pawn ending to claim the full point.

As of the latest updates, 38 players remain perfect with a score of 2/2, including FMs Bryan Lin and Megan Paragua, as well as CM Tariq Yue. Paragua, who faced some challenges in Round 2, displayed remarkable tactical prowess to secure her victory.
