Arjun Erigaisi Becomes 16th Player in History to Break 2800 Elo Barrier in Standard Chess Ratings

Arjun Erigaisi, a 21-year-old Grandmaster from Warangal, Telangana, has made history by becoming the 16th player in the world to break the 2800 Elo barrier in standard chess ratings. This achievement also makes him the second Indian player to reach this milestone, following in the footsteps of the legendary Viswanathan Anand.

With a rating of 2801, Arjun now holds the title of world number-four on the December 2024 FIDE rating list, trailing behind big names like Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, and Hikaru Nakamura. While the increase of just 1.9 points may seem modest, it was enough to push Arjun over the coveted 2800 mark.

In a statement to Chess.com, Arjun expressed his nonchalant attitude towards ratings and rankings, stating, “To be honest, I stopped caring about the ratings and rankings. I don’t really care that much about being in the top-five either.”

Despite his relaxed approach, Arjun faces a tough challenge ahead as he gears up to compete in the Qatar Masters tournament, where he will face off against top players like Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Parham Maghsoodloo. The tournament holds significance as players like Caruana are vying for FIDE Circuit points and a spot in the next FIDE Candidates Tournament.

In the women’s category, players like Tan Zhongyi and Aleksandra Goryachkina saw notable rating gains, while others like Elisabeth Paehtz experienced significant losses. The competitive landscape in chess continues to evolve, with young talents like Maili-Jade Ouellet making impressive strides in their ratings.

As Arjun Erigaisi basks in the glory of his 2800 rating, the chess world eagerly anticipates his performance in upcoming tournaments, where he will strive to maintain his elite status among the world’s top players.
