GM Alexander Shabalov made history by winning the 32nd FIDE World Senior (50+) Championship in Porto Santo, Portugal. The 57-year-old grandmaster claimed the title with an impressive 8½/11 score, edging out Polish GM Michal Krasenkow on tiebreaks. Shabalov became only the second American to win the World Senior title, following in the footsteps of GM Larry Kaufman in 2008.

The 11-round Swiss tournament featured 202 players from 48 different federations across three sections. Shabalov was one of 11 Americans competing in the event, alongside his World Senior Team teammate GM Gregory Kaidanov. Despite facing tough competition, Shabalov and Kaidanov both got off to strong starts in the tournament.

Shabalov’s path to victory was not without its challenges, as he faced tough opponents and had to stage a comeback in the later rounds. His critical wins in the final rounds propelled him to the top of the standings, ultimately securing him the gold medal.

In the 65+ event, German GM Rainer Knaak emerged victorious with an 8½/11 score, ahead of Israeli IM Alexander Mikhalevski and Slovakian GM Lubomir Ftacnik. The American contingent also had a strong showing in this section, with IM Timothy Taylor delivering an impressive performance.

Israeli IM Masha Klinova claimed the title in the Women’s section with an 8½/11 score, showcasing her skill and determination throughout the tournament. The event featured top players from around the world, making for an exciting and competitive atmosphere.
