Arjun Erigaisi Reclaims Indian Spot in Classical Chess Top-10 After Victory in Sweden
Arjun Erigaisi Shines as Lone Indian in Top-10 Chess Rankings
Malmö, Sweden – Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi has made headlines by becoming the sole Indian representative in the top-10 of the live Classical chess rankings, following a stellar performance at the TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament. The 22-year-old prodigy climbed to No. 9 on 2700Chess.com after a decisive victory over Swedish GM Nils Grandelius.
In a thrilling third-round match, Erigaisi showcased his tactical prowess, defeating Grandelius in just 42 moves while playing with the white pieces. This victory not only marked his first win of the tournament but also propelled him past notable players like USA’s Wesley So and China’s Wei Yi in the rankings.
A Competitive Landscape
The tournament has seen intense competition, with World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen engaging in a high-profile 44-move draw against World No. 4 Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Other matches in the third round also ended in draws, including a clash between Dutch GM Jorden van Foreest and American GM Andy Woodward.
Erigaisi’s win has placed him in a joint lead with four other players, including Carlsen, who is making a rare appearance in a Classical tournament outside of his home event, Norway Chess. With four rounds remaining, Arjun is poised to challenge for the top spot, demonstrating his readiness to compete against the best in the world.
Dominance in Rapid and Blitz Formats
In addition to his Classical success, Erigaisi is also making waves in the rapid and blitz formats, where he stands as the only Indian in the top-10. He currently ranks fourth in the FIDE rapid ratings and seventh in blitz, having recently earned bronze medals in both formats at the World Rapid and Blitz Championships in Abu Dhabi.
While India previously boasted three players in the top-10, including reigning world champion D Gukesh and rising star R Praggnanandhaa, both have faced challenges recently, slipping to 18th and 16th respectively in the FIDE ratings.
Looking Ahead
As the TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Arjun Erigaisi. With his recent performances and a strong showing in Sweden, he has not only restored Indian representation in the Classical top-10 but also reignited hopes for a bright future in Indian chess.
Stay tuned as Arjun continues his quest for glory in the coming rounds, aiming to solidify his place among the chess elite.
