New York Dominates at 2026 National Elementary School Championships in Baltimore

Baltimore, MD – The excitement was palpable as 2,535 young chess enthusiasts from 36 states and Washington, D.C. gathered at the Baltimore Convention Center from May 1-3 for the 2026 National Elementary School Championships. This annual event not only showcased the strategic prowess of these budding players but also crowned champions across four competitive sections: K-1, K-3, K-5, and K-6.

New York emerged as the standout state, with over 48% of the participants hailing from the Empire State. Their impressive representation translated into success, as New York players and schools clinched a remarkable seven championships throughout the weekend.

In the K-6 Championship, a thrilling showdown concluded with four co-champions: Winsley Wu (NY), Grant A. Weyman (PA), WFM Aimee Yang (PA), and Steven Liu (MD), each finishing with an impressive score of 6/7. The Speyer Legacy School from New York took home the K-6 Team Championship title.

Fourth grader Aarav Karthik from Michigan claimed the K-5 Championship, finishing with a stellar score of 6½/7. Meanwhile, PS 130 The Parkside School (NY) secured the K-5 Team Championship.

In the K-3 Championship, second grader Mehmet Yilanli from Ohio celebrated his second consecutive spring national title, achieving a perfect score of 7/7, adding to his 2025 K-1 title. PS 198 Isador E Ida Straus (NY) won the K-3 Team Championship.

The K-1 Championship saw first graders Aidan Wang (NY) and Isaac Xiong (NY) share the spotlight as co-champions, both finishing with scores of 6½/7. The K-1 Team Championship ended in a tie between Oak Hall Lower School (FL) and The Speyer Legacy School (NY).

The event also recognized numerous winners in various sections below the championship levels, further highlighting the depth of talent present.

As the chess community celebrates these young champions, the anticipation builds for the next national event—the National Middle School (K-8) Championship, set to take place from May 15-17 in Round Rock, TX. The next National Elementary School Championship will follow on April 30 to May 2 in Columbus, OH.
