Peruvian IM Renato Terry Claims Victory in Thrilling Bullet Brawl

In a stunning display of skill and strategy, Peruvian International Master Renato Terry emerged as the champion of the Bullet Brawl on Saturday, marking his first title in this high-stakes online chess tournament. Terry’s impressive performance saw him overcome a formidable start from Grandmaster Oleksandr Bortnyk, finishing with a winning score of 147 points.

Terry’s victory is particularly noteworthy as he becomes only the third non-Grandmaster to win an edition of Bullet Brawl, a testament to his exceptional talent in the fast-paced world of bullet chess. For his efforts, Terry will take home a prize of $400, while Bortnyk, GM Jose Martinez, and GM Matthias Bluebaum will receive $250, $150, and $100, respectively.

The tournament also recognized the best female player, with 15-year-old Iranian prodigy WIM Melika Mohammadi earning the $100 prize for her 20th-place finish.

The Bullet Brawl, held on Valentine’s Day, featured top seeds including Terry, Martinez, Bortnyk, GM Tuan Minh Le, and IM Faustino Oro. All five players finished in the top 10, showcasing their prowess in this thrilling format.

Bortnyk, riding high from his previous victory, started the tournament with an impressive 21-game winning streak, demonstrating his dominance early on. However, Terry quickly established himself as a serious contender, starting with an astonishing 13.5 out of 14 points, with only Oro managing to hold him to a draw.

As the tournament progressed, Terry’s resilience shone through. He achieved two unbeaten streaks of nine and eleven games, while Bortnyk faced unexpected setbacks, suffering four consecutive losses to top players, including Terry himself.

The pivotal moment came when Terry faced Bortnyk directly, winning their match 5.5 to 2.5. Their encounters were intense, with three games stretching beyond 70 moves, but it was Terry’s strategic brilliance that ultimately secured his victory.

In the final moments of the tournament, Terry solidified his lead with a decisive win over IM Reza Mahdavi, showcasing his tactical acumen in a 38-move duel that ended with Mahdavi’s resignation after a brilliant queen sacrifice.

With this victory, Terry joins an elite group of players who have captured a Bullet Brawl title, further establishing his reputation in the chess community. The next edition of Bullet Brawl is set to take place on Saturday, February 21, at 12 p.m. ET/18:00 CET, promising more thrilling action for chess enthusiasts around the globe.
