Fabiano Caruana: The Reluctant Favorite in the 2024 Candidates Tournament
Fabiano Caruana: The Reluctant Favorite in Cyprus Candidates Tournament
As the chess world gears up for the highly anticipated Candidates tournament in Cyprus starting this Sunday, all eyes are on American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana. At 33, Caruana, currently ranked world No. 3, is no stranger to high-stakes chess, yet he is often criticized for lacking a killer instinct when it matters most.
The Candidates tournament, a prestigious eight-player event, is known for its nerve-wracking scenarios, but Caruana’s track record raises questions about his ability to handle pressure. Despite this, many analysts are dubbing him the favorite, especially with the absence of formidable rivals like Ding Liren and Ian Nepomniachtchi.
Having qualified for the Candidates through the FIDE Circuit of 2024, Caruana enters the tournament with less uncertainty than his competitors. However, this advantage may come with its own set of challenges. Will the lack of recent competitive pressure leave him underprepared for the rigors of the tournament?
Caruana’s past performances in Candidates tournaments reveal a mixed bag of results. In the last round of the previous Candidates, he faced a must-win situation against Nepomniachtchi, holding a commanding +3 advantage for much of the game. Yet, after a grueling 110 moves, he could only manage a draw, allowing Gukesh to advance to the title clash.
Despite these setbacks, Caruana’s chess pedigree is undeniable. He famously defeated Alexander Grischuk in the final round of the 2018 Candidates, earning the right to challenge Magnus Carlsen for the world title. He remains one of only four players in history to achieve an Elo rating above 2825. However, that was over a decade ago, and the landscape of chess has evolved since then.
While Caruana is known for his solid positional understanding and exceptional calculation skills, his decision-making has faltered in recent years, often plagued by mental hurdles. Yet, a strong start in Cyprus could potentially dispel these doubts and reignite his competitive fire.
Since his Candidates debut at the age of 23 in 2016, Caruana has consistently qualified for every tournament, showcasing his resilience and consistency. His past performances include:
- 2016: Finished second, one point behind Sergey Karjakin
- 2018: Won by a point over Karjakin and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov
- 2021: Finished 4th
- 2023: Finished 5th
- 2024: Tied for 2nd
To secure victory in Cyprus, Caruana will need to capitalize on his impressive head-to-head record against his rivals. With a combined score of +4—27 wins, 23 losses, and 87 draws over 137 games—he only needs to maintain this level over 14 rounds to emerge victorious.
As the tournament unfolds, the chess community will be watching closely to see if Fabiano Caruana can overcome his mental barriers and seize the opportunity to challenge for the world title once again. Will he rise to the occasion, or will the pressure prove too great? Only time will tell.
