Indian Chess Grandmasters R. Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali Rameshbabu Set for Historic Candidates Tournament

Paphos, Cyprus – The chess world is abuzz as Indian grandmasters R. Praggnanandhaa and Vaishali Rameshbabu prepare to make history as the first siblings to qualify for the Candidates Tournament together. Scheduled from March 29 to April 15, this prestigious event will see both players vying for a chance to challenge the reigning world champion.

At just 18 years old, Praggnanandhaa, affectionately known as Pragg, has already made a name for himself on the international stage. His debut at the Candidates two years ago was marked by a mix of urgency and aggression, leading to a few missteps, including a notable loss to fellow Indian grandmaster D. Gukesh. However, Pragg’s resilience shone through as he ended the tournament with an even score, defeating Nijat Abasov twice and Vidit Gujrathi once.

Despite facing tough competition from chess titans like Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana in Toronto, Pragg has learned valuable lessons from his experiences. His remarkable journey includes breaking records as the youngest International Master at just 10 years and 10 months, and a significant Elo rating jump from 2741 to 2785 over the past year.

Meanwhile, Vaishali, currently ranked 18th among women with an Elo of 2470, has also demonstrated her mettle. After securing her second consecutive FIDE Grand Swiss title, she is poised to leverage her experience and training alongside Pragg and mentor Viswanathan Anand. However, she faces stiff competition from formidable opponents like Zhu Jiner and Tan Zhongyi, who boast higher ratings and critical strike rates.

The Candidates Tournament format is a double round-robin event featuring eight players in both sections, with matches commencing daily at 3:30 PM local time (7 PM IST). Rest days are scheduled for April 2, 6, 10, and 13, with tiebreaks set for April 16 if necessary.

As both siblings gear up for this monumental challenge, the chess community eagerly anticipates their performances. Will Pragg’s aggressive style and Vaishali’s resilience lead them to victory? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the legacy of the Rameshbabu siblings is just beginning to unfold on the grand stage of chess.
