D Gukesh’s Insight: The FIDE Candidates 2026 and His Potential Challenger for the World Chess Crown
Gukesh Remains Neutral as FIDE Candidates 2026 Approaches
As the chess world gears up for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026, Indian Grandmaster D. Gukesh, the reigning world champion, has chosen to keep his cards close to his chest. The tournament, set to kick off on March 29 at the St. Georges Hotel & Resort in Pegeia, Cyprus, will determine who challenges the 19-year-old prodigy for his world title later this year.
In a recent video interview with the Saint Louis Chess Club, Gukesh was asked to predict the winner of the highly anticipated tournament. Instead of naming a favorite, he expressed excitement for the upcoming matches, stating, “I don’t like to make predictions, but whoever it is, it would be a great match.” This diplomatic response has sparked intrigue among fans and analysts alike.
The Candidates Tournament will feature eight elite players, including Gukesh’s compatriot R. Praggnanandhaa, alongside renowned competitors such as Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Anish Giri, Javokhir Sindarov, Andrey Esipenko, Matthias Blubaum, and Wei Yi. While Caruana, currently ranked world No. 3, is seen as a strong contender, many believe Nakamura also has a solid chance of clinching the title.
Interestingly, Gukesh had previously expressed a desire to face Praggnanandhaa in the championship match, highlighting the significance of an all-Indian showdown. “It would be an Indian clash, and it would be great for the Indian fans,” he remarked, emphasizing the pride and excitement such a match would bring to the nation.
As the tournament approaches, the chess community is abuzz with speculation about who will emerge victorious. With the Women’s Candidates Tournament also taking place concurrently in Cyprus, featuring Indian players Divya Deshmukh and R. Vaishali, the spotlight on Indian chess is brighter than ever.
As the chess pieces prepare to move, all eyes will be on Cyprus to see who will earn the right to challenge Gukesh for the world title. Will it be a familiar face like Caruana or Nakamura, or will a dark horse rise to the occasion? Only time will tell.
