Thrilling Conclusion to the 2026 FIDE Candidates: Sindarov and Vaishali Secure Championship Spots

Drama Unfolds in Final Round of 2026 FIDE Candidates: Sindarov and Vaishali Claim Victory

Cyprus – The final round of the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament delivered a thrilling conclusion, particularly in the Women’s event, where the stakes were high and the tension palpable. While GM Javokhir Sindarov had already secured his spot in the upcoming World Championship with a round to spare, the Women’s event saw GMs Vaishali Rameshbabu and Bibisara Assaubayeva enter the final round tied for first, with four other players still mathematically in contention for the title.

Sindarov, a media darling and fan favorite throughout the tournament, capped off his impressive run with a swift draw against GM Wei Yi, finishing with a remarkable score of 10/14. His performance is being hailed as one of the strongest in Candidates history, solidifying his position as the fifth highest-rated player in the world—a goal he set for himself at the tournament’s outset.

Despite clinching the title early, Sindarov maintained his composure, avoiding any unnecessary risks in his final game. “I wanted to finish strong and show my best,” he said, reflecting on his dominant performance.

In stark contrast, the Women’s event was a nail-biter. Vaishali and Assaubayeva entered the last round with a half-point lead, knowing that a win for both would lead to a playoff, while a loss could open the door for a five-way tie for first.

Assaubayeva faced early difficulties against GM Divya Deshmukh, finding herself in a precarious position. However, a critical mistake from Deshmukh in time trouble allowed Assaubayeva to escape with a draw, keeping her hopes alive.

Meanwhile, Vaishali, who had previously suffered a setback against GM Zhu Jiner, remained focused and composed. She delivered a stunning victory over GM Kateryna Lagno, decisively securing her place in the next Women’s World Championship match. “I knew I had to stay sharp until the end,” Vaishali said, beaming with pride after her victory.

This triumph is particularly significant for Vaishali, who entered the tournament as the lowest-rated player. Her dark-horse performance has not only earned her a spot in the championship but also built her confidence heading into the match against GM Ju Wenjun.

While the final round featured two decisive games in the Open section, they had no impact on the standings, as Sindarov’s lead was insurmountable. GM Fabiano Caruana and GM Anish Giri both secured wins, but it was Sindarov’s consistent performance that stole the spotlight.

As the dust settles on this thrilling tournament, all eyes will now turn to the upcoming World Championship matches. Sindarov will face GM Gukesh Dommaraju, while Vaishali prepares to challenge Ju Wenjun. Dates for these highly anticipated clashes have yet to be announced.

Congratulations to both Sindarov and Vaishali on their outstanding achievements, as they prepare to make their mark on the world stage.
