Vaishali’s Triumph: A Father’s Pride and the Support of a Dedicated Team
Vaishali Rameshbabu Triumphs in Chess Candidates, Inspiring a New Generation
CHENNAI: In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Vaishali Rameshbabu has emerged as a frontrunner in the Chess Candidates tournament, capturing the hearts of chess enthusiasts and inspiring young players across India. As her matches unfolded, her father, Rameshbabu, watched anxiously from home, glued to the television. After her remarkable performance, he couldn’t contain his pride, calling her to say, “Nalla veladina, ma (You played well, dear).”
Reflecting on his daughter’s journey, Rameshbabu shared, “In these 20 years, she has put in a lot of effort and struggled a lot, so it has finally come to fruition. I tell her: If you work hard, you will always get results. I’m feeling very happy and proud.”
The Dronacharya Behind the Queen
Vaishali’s success is not solely her own; she credits her childhood coach, RB Ramesh, a Dronacharya Award winner, for his unwavering support. Ramesh, who promised to celebrate her victory by traveling to Cyprus, booked a flight late Wednesday night, eager to surprise her. “I’m really happy for both Vaishali and Pragg. I hope she doesn’t know that I’m coming,” he said from the airport.
Ramesh, who coaches at three chess academies, noted that while boys still outnumber girls in his setup, Vaishali’s triumph could help shift that balance. “For women’s chess, especially having a world champion from India, it will be a huge boost for the game. It will give a lot of hope and confidence to young girls that they can also be the best in the world,” he explained.
A Friend’s Steadying Presence
Joining Vaishali’s team just a month before the tournament was GM M Pranesh, who played a crucial role in keeping her calm during tense moments. Initially suggested as a joke, Pranesh quickly became an integral part of her support system. “RB sir and his wife Aarthie felt I had the potential to help Vaishali stay mentally stable,” he said. “We played a lot of blitz and practice games, and I was there to analyze her games afterward.”
For Pranesh, the role felt natural, as he was already a friend. “I was trying to keep her mindset in a good space so that she could give her best in the game,” he added.
A New Era for Women in Chess
Vaishali’s victory marks a significant milestone not just for her but for women’s chess in India. As she prepares for the next stages of her career, her achievements serve as a beacon of hope for aspiring female chess players. With role models like Vaishali leading the way, the future of women in chess looks brighter than ever.
As the chess community celebrates her success, one thing is clear: Vaishali Rameshbabu is not just a contender; she is a trailblazer, inspiring a new generation to dream big and reach for the stars.
