Hong Kong, June 17-21, 2026 – The chess world is abuzz with excitement as FIDE has officially unveiled the impressive team lineups for the upcoming FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Team Chess Championships. Set against the stunning backdrop of Hong Kong’s iconic Queen Elizabeth Stadium, this high-stakes event promises to be a thrilling showcase of speed chess, featuring a staggering €500,000 total prize fund.
With 43 teams and over 300 elite players participating, the tournament will be headlined by none other than world number one, GM Magnus Carlsen. Fans can check out the full roster of competitors here.
Now entering its fourth edition since its debut in 2023, the tournament will kick off with three intense days of rapid chess, where players will compete in a 12-round Swiss format with a 15+10 time control for a prize fund of €310,000. Following this, the action will shift into overdrive with two days of blitz chess, featuring a 16-team knockout bracket played at a blistering 3+2 time control for an additional €190,000 prize.
Adding to the excitement, this year marks the debut of the FIDE World Team Amateur Rapid Chess Cup, allowing everyday players to vie for their own shot at global glory alongside the elite.
Defending Champions and Rising Rivals
All eyes will be on the defending champions, Team WR, led by founder and sponsor Wadim Rosenstein. With a “dream team” roster that includes Carlsen, GMs Fabiano Caruana, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Wesley So, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Hou Yifan, and Alexandra Kosteniuk, Team WR arrives in Hong Kong with a massive target on their backs, having captured the 2023 rapid title and back-to-back blitz crowns in 2024 and 2025.
Hot on their heels is Hexamind, determined to dethrone the reigning champions after narrowly missing out on gold in 2025. Their formidable lineup features GMs Levon Aronian, Anish Giri, Alireza Firouzja, Vidit Gujrathi, Kateryna Lagno, and Volodar Murzin.

India’s chess revolution is also in full swing, with Team MGD1 returning after a series of impressive finishes, including a rapid gold in 2025.
