Chessiverse Unveils Bots 4.0: A Revolutionary Leap in AI Chess Experience

Chessiverse Unveils Bots 4.0: A Game-Changer for Chess Enthusiasts

Stockholm County, Sweden, May 20, 2026 — In a groundbreaking move for the chess community, Chessiverse, the innovative online chess platform, has launched Bots 4.0, a complete overhaul of its chess bot infrastructure. Powered by the advanced Maia2 neural network engine, this update promises to redefine the experience of playing against computer opponents, making it more engaging and authentic for players of all skill levels.

Gone are the days of jarring, inhuman moves that often left players frustrated. With Bots 4.0, Chessiverse introduces a roster of bots that not only mimic human-like play but also extend the rating ladder from true beginners to players exceeding a 3000 rating. This means that whether you’re just starting out or looking to challenge yourself against elite-level competition, there’s a bot tailored for you.

Jonatan Pettersson, Co-Founder and Lead Engineer at Chessiverse, explained the rationale behind the rebuild: “With 4.0, the variety comes from a substrate that’s already human-shaped, so the weirdness ceiling is lower without flattening the personality. Stability is the other big one. Bots respond reliably, even at fast time controls.”

Why a Full Rebuild?

The previous versions of Chessiverse’s bot engine relied on a combination of neural networks and Stockfish instances, which, while effective, led to inconsistencies and occasional non-human moves, particularly during endgames. By completely replacing the core move-generation engine with Maia2, the Chessiverse team has streamlined the system while preserving its unique PersonaPlay™ features, including distinct playstyles and opening books.

What Maia2 Brings to the Table

Maia2 is designed to predict human chess moves rather than simply calculating the strongest possible plays. This shift results in several key benefits:

  • Fewer Inhuman Moves: The candidate pool generated by Maia2 is inherently human-shaped, reducing the need for extensive post-processing filters.
  • True Beginner-Level Bots: For the first time, Chessiverse can offer bots that play weak chess in a realistic manner, mirroring the blunders of actual beginners.
  • Expanded Rating Range: The new engine allows for ratings that extend beyond 3000, catering to the full spectrum of player strengths.
  • Hyper-Bullet Support: With the removal of Stockfish from the move-processing pipeline, Bots 4.0 can now handle hyper-bullet time controls, making fast-paced games more feasible.

PersonaPlay™ Fully Preserved

Despite the significant changes under the hood, all of the beloved PersonaPlay™ features remain intact. Each of the 1000+ bots retains its unique personality and playstyle, ensuring that players can still enjoy the rich, engaging experience they’ve come to expect.

What Comes Next

With a stable foundation now in place, Chessiverse is focused on refining playstyles, expanding its roster of bots, and enhancing the overall user experience. A Bots 5.0 is not currently planned, as the team aims to build upon this solid groundwork.

Availability

Bots 4.0 is now live for all Chessiverse users. Free members can enjoy unlimited games against a selection of bots, while premium members gain access to the complete roster of over 1000 bots. For more details, visit Chessiverse.
