GMs Fabiano Caruana and Alexander Donchenko emerged as the champions of the inaugural 2024 Saint Louis Masters, showcasing their exceptional skills and strategic prowess in the intense nine-round tournament. Both players finished with an impressive 6.5/9 score, securing their victory without the need for tiebreaks and each earning a substantial $17,500 in prize money.

For Caruana, the reigning U.S. Champion, the tournament had a bittersweet ending. Leading the competition since the fourth round, he only needed a draw in his final game to clinch sole first place. However, Donchenko had other plans and won with Black, dashing Caruana’s hopes of a clear victory. Despite this setback, Caruana managed to overtake GM Arjun Erigaisi and currently leads the 2024 FIDE Circuit standings.

The Saint Louis Masters attracted 59 players, including 34 grandmasters, to the Maryland Ballroom at the Royal Sonesta Chase Park Plaza Hotel from December 3 to 7. The tournament featured intense competition and high-level chess, with Caruana showcasing his dominance in the early rounds. However, Donchenko proved to be a formidable opponent, spoiling Caruana’s dream tournament in the final round with a strategic victory.
