Chess Titans Set to Clash at the 2026 Naroditsky Memorial Rapid & Blitz
Charlotte, NC — The chess world is abuzz with excitement as Grandmasters Fabiano Caruana and Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus have confirmed their participation in the highly anticipated 2026 Naroditsky Memorial Rapid & Blitz, set to take place from July 3-5 at the Charlotte Marriott City Center. With a staggering prize fund of $50,000, this inaugural event promises to be a showcase of elite chess talent.
Caruana, a stalwart of American chess, joins an already stellar lineup that includes fellow GMs Hikaru Nakamura, Wesley So, and Hans Niemann, among others. His entry solidifies the event’s status as a gathering of some of the strongest players in the world, with four of America’s top grandmasters now set to compete.
The spotlight also shines on 14-year-old Erdogmus, who recently made headlines as the youngest player in history to cross the 2700 Elo mark. While his rapid and blitz performances are still developing, his impressive online track record suggests he could be a formidable contender in Charlotte.
The tournament will feature a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars. Javokhir Sindarov, who recently won the Candidates Tournament, will also be in attendance, preparing to challenge reigning World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju later this year.
Chess.com’s FM Mike Klein has highlighted the seven biggest names in the tournament in a recent video, showcasing the depth of talent that will be on display. With a total of 42 grandmasters signed up, the Naroditsky Memorial is shaping up to be one of the strongest speed chess events ever held in the United States.
Among the notable participants are GMs Aravindh Chithambaram, Nodirbek Yakubboev, and Andy Woodward, all of whom bring their own unique flair to the competition. The event will also honor the late GM Daniel Naroditsky, a beloved figure in the chess community known for his exceptional blitz skills and contributions as an educator and commentator.
“Danya was a world-class player and content creator, so having the world’s best under one roof in Charlotte is the ultimate tribute to his legacy,” said Peter Giannatos, Founding Executive Director of the Charlotte Chess Center. The tournament will feature separate championships for Rapid and Blitz, with a total prize fund of $40,000, alongside a Creator Invitational that will see popular chess streamers and content creators compete.
As the event approaches, chess enthusiasts are encouraged to secure their spots, with discounted hotel rates expiring on June 1. Spectator passes are also available for fans eager to witness the action live, with VIP packages offering exclusive perks.
With the chess community rallying around this event, the 2026 Naroditsky Memorial Rapid & Blitz is set to be a memorable celebration of the game, honoring a cherished figure while showcasing the best of chess talent.
