S8UL’s Aravindh Chithambaram Qualifies for Esports World Cup 2026
DreamHack Atlanta – In a historic achievement for Indian esports, S8UL’s Grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram has officially qualified for the Chess main event at the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026. This milestone not only marks Aravindh as the first Indian player to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament but also solidifies S8UL’s presence in its third title at the EWC.
The Road to EWC qualifier, held at DreamHack Atlanta, featured a rigorous format that included a group stage followed by playoffs. Players faced off in two-game series, with Armageddon serving as the tiebreaker in case of draws. Aravindh showcased his prowess in Group B, advancing to the Upper Bracket semifinals after defeating formidable opponents like Kyler Raines, Justin Liang, Oleksander Bortnyk, and Christopher Woo.
In a thrilling semifinal rematch against Woo, Aravindh triumphed 2-1, clinching victory in the Armageddon game after the first two games ended in draws. He continued his winning streak with another 2-1 victory over Alexey Sarana in the Upper Bracket Final, propelling him into the grand final.
The grand final was a nail-biter, played in a double-match format. Sarana, coming from the Lower Bracket, won the first two games, putting Aravindh on the back foot. However, demonstrating remarkable composure and skill, Aravindh fought back to win the Armageddon decider, sealing his qualification for the EWC 2026.
With this victory, the 26-year-old not only earned USD 15,000 (~INR 14 lakh) in prize money but also secured a coveted place among the eight players officially qualified for the EWC 2026 Chess main event, scheduled for August 11 to 15, boasting an impressive overall prize pool of USD 1.5 million (~INR 14 crore).
Aravindh’s qualification adds to S8UL’s growing legacy in esports, following successful campaigns in Fortnite and Honor of Kings. Fellow S8UL Grandmasters Nihal Sarin and Pranesh M are also in contention for the Chess event, with nine players set to qualify through the Champions Chess Tour Leaderboard, where Nihal currently holds a qualifying position.
As part of its ambitious international esports campaign, S8UL has been selected for the Esports Foundation’s Club Partner Program for the second consecutive year. The organization is competing across qualifiers for 13 titles, including Apex Legends, Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), Call of Duty: Warzone, and more.
The EWC 2026, taking place from July 6 to August 23, will gather over 2,000 players from 200 clubs across more than 100 countries, competing for a record-breaking prize pool of USD 75 million (~INR 720 crore). With Aravindh’s qualification, S8UL is poised to make a significant impact on the global esports stage.
