Fabiano Caruana Dominates 2024 SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz Croatia, Matches Carlsen’s Record
Fabiano Caruana, the Grandmaster from the United States, has made history by winning the 2024 SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz Croatia tournament with an impressive five rounds to spare. Scoring a total of 27 points across the five days, Caruana matched the record set by Magnus Carlsen in 2019 for the most points earned in a GCT rapid and blitz event.
The final day of the tournament saw Caruana maintain his dominance, clinching the title by winning his first three games and drawing the fourth. Despite already securing the victory, Caruana continued to play out the remaining rounds, ultimately matching Carlsen’s record with 27 points.
In a heated battle for second place, GMs Wesley So, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Alireza Firouzja all ended up scoring 23 points each, resulting in a large tie for the runner-up position.
The tournament also featured some memorable moments, including a comical incident where GM Anish Giri arrived late and almost missed his game against Vidit Gujrathi. Additionally, Kasparov shared his insights on the players, the upcoming World Championship match, and the future of the Grand Chess Tour.
With the Grand Chess Tour set to conclude in St. Louis with the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz and the Sinquefield Cup in August, Caruana’s victory in Croatia has set the stage for an exciting finale to the prestigious tournament series.
