Sigrun Øen, Mother of World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, Passes Away at 61
The chess world is mourning the loss of Sigrun Øen, the mother of 16th World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, who passed away in Oslo at the age of 61. Sigrun, a chemical engineer, was a pillar of support for her son throughout his chess career, even taking a European trip with the family to help Magnus pursue his dreams.
Her daughter Ellen shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, describing Sigrun as a dear mother and grandmother who passed away too soon. Sigrun’s husband Henrik also paid tribute to her on a memorial page, thanking her for more than 41 years of love and support.
The sad news has led to Magnus Carlsen withdrawing from the Grand Chess Tour event in Croatia, with American GM Levon Aronian stepping in as a wildcard. The funeral for Sigrun will take place on July 17, with the family requesting donations to the Norwegian Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
Our thoughts are with the Carlsen family during this difficult time as they mourn the loss of a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. May Sigrun rest in peace.
