Major Renovations Transform College Park’s Charles E. Phillips Esquire Park

College Park, GA – After decades of advocacy and planning, the revitalization of Charles E. Phillips Esquire Park is nearing completion, marking a significant milestone for the community. Once viewed as a neglected space, the park has been transformed into a vibrant gathering area, complete with modern amenities designed for families and children.

Local resident Amanda White, who lives just a stone’s throw away, has already noticed the positive changes. “I usually come down here on my lunch break,” she shared. “It feels more welcoming and family-friendly. It’s great to let the kids run around and enjoy the park.”

The extensive renovations, funded by approximately $1.7 million from Community Development Block Grants, the City of College Park, Fulton County, and HUD, include a new playground, splash pad, soccer field, basketball courts, pickleball and tennis courts, a boxing ring, walking track, and a chess patio.

Councilman Roderick Gay, who has championed the park’s transformation since 1998, expressed his excitement over the project. “This park has always been an important gathering place for families and young athletes,” he said. “It’s built for the people.”

In addition to the physical upgrades, city leaders are committed to making the park more inclusive. In partnership with the Chaka Khan Foundation, College Park has begun installing communication boards to assist neurodivergent or nonverbal children in expressing themselves while at the park. These boards are already in place at Charles E. Phillips Esquire Park, with plans to expand the initiative to all parks and recreation facilities in the area.

The next phase of development is set to kick off this summer, featuring enhanced lighting, a soundstage for music and movie nights, and new areas for skating and biking. “It’s just amazing,” Gay remarked, reflecting on the park’s evolution.

For families like Amanda White’s, the upgrades are not just aesthetic; they represent a renewed sense of community and belonging. “I really like the upgrades. Everything looks really nice,” she said, embodying the excitement shared by many in the neighborhood.

As the final touches are put on this beloved community space, Charles E. Phillips Esquire Park stands as a testament to the power of community advocacy and the importance of creating inclusive spaces for all.
