Midrand Chess Club Gears Up for Major Tournament to Boost Local Chess Community

Midrand, South Africa – The Midrand Chess Club is set to host its fifth tournament of the year on May 30 at Halfway House Primary School, marking a significant milestone in its mission to promote chess within the community. The upcoming Chess SA rated Classical Chess Tournament promises to be one of the club’s largest events yet, attracting both junior and senior players for a day filled with strategic battles on the chessboard.

With a substantial cash prize pool of R7,050, the tournament is expected to draw a competitive field. Participants will compete in three distinct sections: open, high school, and primary school, ensuring that players of all ages and skill levels have a platform to showcase their talents.

The tournament will follow a 60-minute classical format with no increment, allowing players ample time to focus on tactical and positional play. This format is designed to encourage deeper strategic thinking, making each match a true test of skill.

Club coach Kgosimang Molefe expressed enthusiasm about the event, stating, “This edition represents a significant commitment to making chess accessible across all age groups and skill levels. By offering three distinct sections, we’re creating pathways for young players to develop while giving experienced players a competitive platform.”

In the open section, cash prizes will range from R2,000 for first place to R300 for fifth place. High school players will compete for prizes between R750 and R50, while primary school participants will vie for bronze, silver, and gold medals.

Molefe emphasized the importance of community support in making this tournament possible. “Our progress would not have been achievable without the dedication of parents, volunteers, and local chess enthusiasts who continue to invest their time and resources into developing the sport in Midrand,” he said.

The club aims to establish this tournament as an annual flagship event, further solidifying Midrand’s reputation as a leading chess hub in Gauteng. “The R7,050 prize fund and Gauteng sports medal support show that we’re serious about recognizing excellence and encouraging participation,” Molefe added.

Registration for the tournament closes on May 27 at 20:00, and participants are encouraged to register online as no cash entries will be accepted at the venue.
