Remembering Daniel Naroditsky: A Legacy of Chess and Community
Inaugural Memorial Tournament to Honor the Life of the Chess Grandmaster
Tragic Loss of Chess Champion Daniel Naroditsky Sparks Memorial Tournament in His Honor
Charlotte, NC – October 19, 2024 – The chess world is mourning the unexpected loss of Daniel Naroditsky, a celebrated grandmaster and beloved coach at the Charlotte Chess Center, who passed away at the age of 29. His family confirmed the news, leaving a profound impact on the community he cherished.
In the wake of his passing, Peter Giannatos, a close friend and the founder of the Charlotte Chess Center, is determined to ensure that Naroditsky’s legacy lives on. “We want his memory to live on positively,” Giannatos stated, as he announced the inaugural Daniel Naroditsky Memorial Rapid and Blitz Tournament, set to take place from July 2–5, 2025. This event, created in collaboration with Naroditsky’s family, aims to honor his life and contributions to the chess community.
Naroditsky, who became a grandmaster at just 18, was known for his engaging commentary and vibrant online presence, amassing a significant following on platforms like YouTube and Twitch. His sudden death on October 19, 2025, shocked fans and friends alike, prompting discussions about mental health and the pressures faced by competitive players.
The upcoming tournament will not only celebrate Naroditsky’s favorite formats—rapid and blitz chess—but will also strive to be more inclusive than traditional elite events. “If he was alive, I guarantee you, he would have been one of the first people to sign up for this exact event,” Giannatos remarked, emphasizing the tournament’s design to welcome players of all skill levels, including content creators and commentators.
Giannatos has poured his grief into organizing the memorial, viewing it as a way to honor his friend while navigating his own sorrow. “It’s all done out of pure passion and commitment to our late colleague,” he shared, reflecting on how the process has helped him cope.
An autopsy revealed that Naroditsky had substances in his system at the time of his death, leading to discussions about the challenges he faced. While initially investigated as a suicide, officials later ruled it an accidental death. Giannatos aims to shift the narrative surrounding Naroditsky’s passing, focusing instead on the positive impact he had on the chess community.
The memorial tournament will take place at the Marriott City Center, with the hope of bridging the gap between elite players and amateurs, fostering a sense of community and support. Naroditsky’s family, including his brother Alan, who is involved in the Charlotte Chess Center Foundation, is grateful for the initiatives being put in place to honor his memory.
As the chess community prepares for this significant event, Giannatos expresses a desire for the tournament to be a source of joy and inspiration. “We just don’t want his life to be in vain. We want it to be very much in a positive light,” he concluded.
The Daniel Naroditsky Memorial Rapid and Blitz Tournament promises to be a heartfelt tribute to a remarkable talent whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations of chess players.
