Alpine APL Pipers Revamp Roster for Global Chess League Season 4 with Star-Studded Additions
Title: Alpine APL Pipers Revamp Roster Ahead of Global Chess League Season 4
Mumbai, June 29, 2026 — The excitement is palpable as the defending champions, Alpine APL Pipers, gear up for the fourth season of the Global Chess League (GCL), set to take place in Bengaluru from September 3 to 13. In a bold move, the Pipers have restructured their roster, welcoming an impressive lineup that includes chess luminaries Magnus Carlsen, Koneru Humpy, Divya Deshmukh, Anish Giri, Vidit Gujrathi, and reigning world rapid champion Volodar Murzin.
This season marks a significant milestone for Deshmukh, who will make her GCL debut, while Carlsen returns after a season away, promising to bring his unparalleled expertise back to the board. Notably absent this year are world champion Gukesh, women’s championship contender Vaishali Rameshbabu, and rising star R Praggnanandhaa, who have opted out of the competition.
The GCL Draft, held in Mumbai earlier this week, saw the FYERS American Gambits assemble a formidable team, featuring recent Bullet Chess Champion Nihal Sarin, world championship contender Javokhir Sindarov, and three-time world blitz champion Bibisara Assaubayeva. Their strategic acquisitions signal a strong intent to challenge for the title.
In a historic twist, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand will switch teams for the first time in league history, leaving the Ganges Grandmasters to join the PBG Alaskan Knights. Anand will team up with rising star Arjun Erigaisi and the prodigious 14-year-old Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, alongside chess veterans Kateryna Lagno and Nino Batsiashvili, as well as the youngest grandmaster in history, Abhimanyu Mishra.
The two-time champions and last season’s runners-up, Triveni Continental Kings, have also made strategic moves, retaining Season 3 MVP Alireza Firouzja and adding promising talents Aravindh Chithambaram and Pranav Venkatesh, along with the experienced Alexandra Kosteniuk.
As the countdown to the GCL begins, fans are eager to see how these powerhouse teams will clash on the chessboard. With a mix of seasoned champions and emerging talents, this season promises to be one of the most thrilling yet.
