Who says chess is a solitary pursuit? Grab your partner and prepare for the exhilarating chaos of the Chess.com Bughouse Chess Championship, set to take place from August 3 to August 7! With a $5,000 prize fund on the line, this event promises to be a thrilling showcase of teamwork and strategy.

What is Bughouse?

Bughouse is one of the most beloved chess variants worldwide, often seen at chess gatherings buzzing with excitement. In this dynamic format, two players team up to battle on separate boards—one playing White and the other Black. The twist? When a player captures an opponent’s piece, that piece is handed over to their partner, who can then deploy it on their own board. If either player wins their game, the entire team claims victory!

This unique mechanic transforms Bughouse into a whirlwind of tactical maneuvers and daring sacrifices, where taking the initiative is crucial. Players must think not just for themselves but also for their partner, leading to breathtaking attacks and wild king hunts.

Join the Action!

The championship kicks off with eight qualifiers, each featuring a two-hour arena with a 3+0 time control from August 3 to August 6. Chess enthusiasts can participate by checking the qualifier schedule and clicking the Join button. Players can enter as a team or solo, with the latter being paired automatically by the system. However, only teams will qualify for the Final.

To ensure fair play, participants may be required to join a video call, setting up two cameras from different angles. Non-compliance could lead to disqualification, so players should be prepared!

The Grand Finale

The winning team from each qualifier will advance to the Final on August 7, which features a double-elimination knockout bracket and a 2+0 time control. Teams will earn points for wins or draws, and the team with the most points when time runs out will be crowned champions.

Last year, national masters Janak Awatramani and Isaac Chiu clinched the title after an undefeated run, overcoming formidable opponents, including the 2024 Bughouse champions, GMs Awonder Liang and Jeffery Xiong. Will they defend their title, or will a new duo rise to the challenge?

Are You Ready?

The Chess.com Bughouse Championship is not just a tournament; it’s a celebration of camaraderie and creativity in chess.
