Tech Mahindra Global Chess League Returns for Thrilling Fourth Season

Bengaluru, India – The highly anticipated Tech Mahindra Global Chess League (GCL) is set to return for its fourth season, with chess superstar GM Magnus Carlsen leading an elite lineup of players in what promises to be an exhilarating tournament. Scheduled to take place in Bengaluru, this year’s GCL is expected to deliver some of the most exciting matchups in the history of the league.

As part of the festivities, the GCL Contenders will once again open its doors to both amateurs and professionals, offering a unique opportunity to compete on the world stage. The online open qualifiers run from August 7 to August 22, accommodating players across various time zones. Aspiring participants can register now for a chance to join Carlsen and other chess legends in the main event.

Last year, the GCL Contenders saw fierce competition, with GM Jose Martinez, IM Mai Narva, and IM Faustino Oro emerging victorious from a pool of over 20,000 participants. This year, three coveted spots in the main event are up for grabs—one for a male player, one for a female player, and one for a junior.

Whether you’re a titled player looking to elevate your career or an amateur eager to test your skills, the GCL Contenders offers a pathway to compete alongside the best in the game.

GCL Contenders Format & Dates

This year’s GCL Contenders features three sections: men, women, and juniors, aligning with the GCL’s team composition. With a prize fund of $12,000 and Chess.com Diamond Memberships for the winners of each arena, the stakes are high.

The competition kicks off with the GCL Opens, a series of three-hour arenas featuring a 5+0 time control, open to all non-titled players. Each section will host six arenas, with the top two players from each advancing to the next stage.

Following the Opens, the GCL Contender Titled Swiss will see titled players join the qualifiers in a seven-round Swiss format with a 10+0 time control. The top player from each Swiss will become a GCL Ambassador, earning a trip to Bengaluru for the main event, while the top six from each Swiss will receive cash prizes and eligibility for the GCL Players Swiss.

In the final stage, the GCL Players Swiss combines all sections into a single event, where Ambassadors and GCL players compete for cash prizes in another seven-round Swiss format.

What Is The Global Chess League?

The GCL is the world’s first major official franchise-style chess league, where teams compete in rapid games, with wins for Black earning more points than those for White. This unique scoring system encourages risk-taking and adds an element of drama to the competition.

The league has attracted chess legends such as Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and Viswanathan Anand, making it a must-watch event for chess enthusiasts. Last year, the Alpine SG Pipers clinched the title with the help of stars like Caruana and Hou Yifan.
