In a groundbreaking move for the world of sports, the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) has announced that chess will be included in the upcoming Junior Olympic Games. This addition marks a significant milestone for the game, which has long been celebrated for its strategic depth and intellectual rigor. Matt Thomas, the first American chessboxing world champion, will spearhead the AAU’s new chess program, promising to elevate the game to new heights.

Jo Mirza, President of the AAU, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “Matt’s expertise and love for the sport will lay the foundation to grow and expand AAU Chess around the country and globally.” With nearly 1,000,000 members and 150,000 volunteers across 45 sports, the AAU is the largest non-profit, event-driven multi-sports organization in the United States. The Junior Olympic Games, which can feature up to 19,000 competitors, is the largest multi-sport event for youth in the country, making it the perfect platform for chess to shine.

The AAU’s foray into chess began with the sponsorship of the first annual Naroditsky Memorial Rapid and Blitz Tournament earlier this month. Peter Giannatos, President of the Charlotte Chess Center, welcomed the AAU’s involvement, saying, “We’re excited to welcome AAU Chess into the broader chess community, and we are grateful for their contribution to support youth chess in the name of GM Daniel Naroditsky’s memory.”

Thomas, who has been a passionate advocate for chessboxing and its individual components, emphasized the transformative power of chess. “Chess changes lives. The game shaped the way I think, and I’m honored to enter this role with the AAU to solidify chess as its newest sport offering,” he said. “This initiative will provide a new international competition and accolade for young chess players all over the world in the AAU Chess Junior Olympics.”
