BUDAPEST, July 20 — In a historic move, Hungary’s ruling Tisza party has unanimously endorsed chess icon Judit Polgar for the presidency, with a final decision on her nomination expected at their upcoming meeting. This announcement comes as Prime Minister Peter Magyar seeks to reshape the political landscape following his recent electoral victory.

Polgar, widely celebrated as the greatest female chess player of all time, has been proposed for the largely ceremonial role of president until a new constitution is established. Magyar expressed his intention to invite Polgar to take on this significant position, emphasizing the need for a leader who embodies national unity and constitutional integrity.

The push for a new president follows the resignation of Tamas Sulyok, who signed a constitutional amendment that concluded his term. This transition is part of Magyar’s broader initiative to dismantle the political stronghold of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whose nationalist Fidesz party was ousted in a landslide election victory in April.

With a commanding two-thirds majority in parliament, the Tisza party is poised to elect a new president who will serve until the new constitution is ratified or for a maximum of five years. Andrea Bujdoso, the leader of the parliamentary group, praised Polgar, stating that she is “patriotic, honourable, empathetic, brave, outstanding, and dedicated in her profession,” and capable of representing the nation’s unity.

Magyar reiterated the importance of the presidential role, stating, “The president of the republic must be a person who guards the unity of the nation and constitutionality.”

Polgar, who recently gained further recognition through the documentary “Queen of Chess,” is the only female player to have ever ranked in the world’s top 10 in a sport traditionally dominated by men. Notably, she is also the first woman to surpass the 2700 rating threshold, a benchmark for “Super Grandmaster” status.

As Hungary stands at a political crossroads, the potential election of Judit Polgar as president could symbolize a new era of leadership and inclusivity in the nation. The chess champion, who could not be reached for comment, may soon find herself not just a queen on the chessboard, but a pivotal figure in Hungary’s political landscape.
