Rising Stars of Indian Chess: Vaishali and Coach RB Ramesh Celebrate Pranesh M’s Triumph at Chennai Grand Masters

Title: Rising Star Pranesh M: The Unsung Hero Behind Vaishali’s Historic Win

NEW DELHI: In the heart of Chennai, known as the chess capital of India, the annual Chennai Grand Masters tournament has become a prestigious event for elite players. This year, the tournament, which features two sections—Masters and Challengers—saw a whirlwind of excitement, especially with the emergence of young Grandmaster Pranesh M.

Despite the tournament’s controversial last-minute announcement, which some critics claimed was designed to favor players like Dommaraju Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi for the 2024 Candidates Tournament, FIDE deputy president Viswanathan Anand assured that the event adhered to all regulations. The 2025 edition marked the third installment, and it was here that R Vaishali, a rising star in Indian chess, faced a challenging journey in the Challengers section.

While Vaishali struggled to find her footing, finishing at the bottom of the standings, it was Pranesh who captured the spotlight by clinching the Challengers title. His victory not only showcased his talent but also set the stage for a remarkable partnership that would unfold later in Cyprus.

The Lighthearted Companion

As Vaishali prepared for the Candidates tournament, she revealed the pivotal role Pranesh played in her success. “It was basically Ramesh sir and Aarthie aunty’s idea to take Pranesh to Candidates because he is a very nice and funny person to be around,” she shared with ChessBase India. In the high-pressure environment of the Candidates tournament, where every move counts, Pranesh’s lighthearted demeanor provided a much-needed reprieve.

“Whenever I got to his room after tough games, he would say, ‘It was okay akka,’” Vaishali recalled, highlighting how Pranesh’s support helped her navigate the intense atmosphere. Their bond extended beyond emotional support; they also collaborated on opening strategies, making Pranesh not just a confidant but a valuable sparring partner.

From Humble Beginnings to Grandmaster

Pranesh’s journey from Karaikudi, a small town in Tamil Nadu, to the international chess stage is nothing short of inspiring. Born to a mother who worked at an anganwadi and a father who was an accountant, Pranesh faced financial constraints but never let them hinder his aspirations. “I just learned from whatever I could find,” he stated, reflecting on his resourceful approach to chess without access to modern tools.

His coach, RB Ramesh, recognized Pranesh’s potential early on. After becoming an International Master in 2020, Pranesh’s rise continued, culminating in his title as India’s 79th Grandmaster in 2023. The bond between Pranesh and Ramesh was beautifully captured in a viral photo of Ramesh attempting to lift Pranesh in celebration after his Challengers win. “I’m so much heavier now, so it must’ve been difficult for him,” Pranesh joked.

A New Chapter in Cyprus

Currently balancing his studies in Computer Science at SRM University with the demands of professional chess, Pranesh’s role in Cyprus was unique. He wasn’t competing for his own accolades but was there to support Vaishali as she aimed for a historic victory against China’s Ju Wenjun for the World Championship.

As the world watches Vaishali prepare for this monumental match, it’s essential to acknowledge the contributions of the young Grandmaster from Karaikudi. Pranesh M, who once studied chess without a laptop, has now played a crucial role in propelling India to its first-ever Women’s Candidates victory.

In a sport where individual brilliance often overshadows teamwork, Pranesh’s story serves as a reminder that behind every champion, there is often an unsung hero.
