As the curtain prepares to fall on the much-anticipated revival of Chess, excitement and nostalgia fill the air at the Imperial Theatre. Starring Broadway luminaries Aaron Tveit, Lea Michele, and Nicholas Christopher, this production has captivated audiences since its debut, earning five Tony Award nominations in the process.

Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, Chess delves into the intense personal and political rivalries between two world chess champions: the American Freddie Trumper, played by Tony Award winner Aaron Tveit, and the Russian Anatoly Sergievsky, portrayed by 2026 Tony nominee Nicholas Christopher. Caught in the crossfire is Florence Vassy, brought to life by Emmy nominee Lea Michele, whose character navigates the tumultuous waters of love and ambition.

This revival marks the first time Chess has graced Broadway since its original premiere in 1988, and it has been met with enthusiasm from both longtime fans and newcomers alike. The show will conclude its run on June 21, after an impressive 250 performances, leaving a lasting legacy in its wake.

Producers Tom Hulce, Robert Ahrens, and The Shubert Organization expressed their pride in the production, stating, “We are immensely proud of the extraordinary work this cast and creative team have done in reimagining Chess for a new generation of theatergoers while honoring the passionate fans who have championed this musical for nearly four decades.”

The revival has not only garnered critical acclaim but also a slew of nominations, including nods for Nicholas Christopher, Hannah Cruz as Svetlana, Bryce Pinkham as the Arbiter, and technical categories for lighting by Kevin Adams and orchestrations by Brian Usifer.

Directed by Michael Mayer, the production features a new book by Emmy Award winner Danny Strong, with music and lyrics by the iconic duo Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA fame, alongside EGOT winner Tim Rice. Their legendary score has resonated with audiences, ensuring that the themes of love, betrayal, and strategy remain relevant today.

As the final performances approach, the buzz around Chess continues to grow. Audiences are encouraged to secure their tickets for this historic run before it’s too late. The opportunity to witness such a stellar cast perform this timeless musical is one that will linger in the hearts of theatergoers long after the final bow.
