ChessFest 2026: A Day of Strategy and Celebration in Trafalgar Square

London, UK – On Sunday, July 12, Trafalgar Square will transform into a chess lover’s paradise as ChessFest returns for its annual celebration, inviting players of all ages and skill levels to immerse themselves in the world of chess—completely free of charge. The event kicks off at noon and runs until 7 PM, promising a day filled with excitement, learning, and community spirit.

ChessFest is not just for seasoned players; complete beginners are warmly welcomed. Tutors from Chess in Schools and Communities will be on hand to provide guidance and instruction, ensuring that everyone can join in the fun.

Meet the Masters

The highlight of the day will feature renowned chess experts, including nine-time British champion Michael Adams and three-time champion Gawain Maroroa Jones, who will engage in simultaneous displays and one-on-one speed games in the “Challenge the Chess Master” tent. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to test their skills against some of the best in the game.

In 2021, a six-year-old named Kushal Jakhria made headlines when he faced Adams in a simul, showcasing remarkable talent that later earned him world and European junior titles. This year, England’s national coaches will be scouting for fresh talent among the participants, hoping to discover the next chess prodigy.

Activities for All

ChessFest will feature hundreds of chess sets and boards, including giant sets for those looking to make a big impression. Attendees can participate in “Living Chess,” where professional actors will reenact famous games on oversized boards. For those seeking a mental challenge, the “Puzzle Rush” will test tactical skills, while spectators can enjoy thrilling giant blitz matches that combine skill and stamina.

A Celebration of History

This year’s ChessFest also commemorates the 175th anniversary of the Immortal Game, a legendary match played in 1851 at Simpson’s-in-the-Strand, just a short bus ride from Trafalgar Square. The game, celebrated for its brilliant sacrifices, will be reenacted during the event, offering a glimpse into chess history.

More Than Just London

For those unable to attend the London festivities, ChessFest will be held in various locations across the UK in the coming weeks, including Portishead, Hull, Liverpool, Coventry, and Lancaster.

Looking Ahead

As the chess community gears up for the upcoming 200-nation Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, England’s national teams have been announced. The open team, led by captain William Watson, includes notable players like Adams and Jones, while the women’s team features the nation’s top-rated players, including Bodhana Sivanandan, who made her Olympiad debut at just nine years old.

With a mix of experience and youthful talent, both teams are poised to make a strong showing, especially after a disappointing performance in Budapest in 2024.

Join the Celebration

ChessFest 2026 promises to be a day of camaraderie, competition, and celebration of the game. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned player, Trafalgar Square will be the place to be on July 12. For more information, visit ChessFest’s official website.

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to be part of a vibrant chess community and witness the magic of the game unfold in the heart of London!
