Viswanathan Anand: Deep Understanding is the Key to Success in Modern Chess
Viswanathan Anand Advocates Deep Understanding in Modern Chess at Inaugural Workshop
Chennai, February 12, 2023 — Five-time World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand captivated attendees at the inaugural event of a three-day chess workshop on Thursday, emphasizing the importance of deep understanding in an age dominated by data and computer analysis.
Speaking to a packed audience, Anand remarked, “Funnily enough, the more that is available for you to know, the less you can know. If every day you’re subjected to 20, 30 new conclusions, how do you make sense of it?” His words resonated with aspiring chess players, highlighting that true differentiation in modern chess lies not in the sheer volume of information but in the depth of comprehension.
Reflecting on his own journey, Anand drew parallels to his early adaptation to computer technology in chess. He stressed that while being open to new ideas is beneficial, it is a profound understanding of the game that elevates a player’s performance. “Chess mastery is rooted in pattern recognition rather than rote memorization,” he explained, citing his experience of playing approximately 6,000 to 7,000 competitive games. Anand noted that the brain subconsciously connects patterns from previous games, often leading to insights that emerge long after the initial exposure.
“Just like a language, you cannot learn only from dictionaries; you learn it by speaking it,” Anand asserted, underscoring the necessity of developing a ‘feeling’ for the game. He likened theoretical knowledge to mere “material ingredients” that require the art of “cooking” to create a successful game.
Anand also expressed his vision to popularize chess beyond the traditional strongholds of Tamil Nadu, commending efforts to replicate Chennai’s success in cities like Madurai, Salem, and Coimbatore. His commitment to nurturing young talent was evident as he launched his latest book, Lightning Kid, in collaboration with the Velammal Education Trust.
The workshop, organized by the Velammal Education Trust from February 12-14, aims to inspire the next generation of chess players. Notably, several international masters, including Praggnanandhaa R, Vaishali R, and Gukesh Dommaraju, are proud alumni of the Velammal institution.
As the chess community gathers to learn from one of its greatest minds, Anand’s insights serve as a reminder that in the world of chess, understanding the game’s intricacies is the key to unlocking true potential.
