Indian Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh Set to Make History at Norway Chess Women
Oslo, Norway – Indian Grandmaster and reigning Women’s World Cup champion Divya Deshmukh is poised to make her debut at the prestigious Norway Chess Women tournament later this year, marking a significant milestone as the youngest player to compete in the event since its inception in 2024. The 19-year-old chess prodigy will showcase her skills in Oslo from May 25 to June 5, following a remarkable season that has firmly established her among the elite in the chess world.
Deshmukh’s meteoric rise in the chess arena reached new heights last year when she clinched the Women’s World Cup title in Batumi, simultaneously earning her Grandmaster title and a spot in the Women’s Candidates tournament. Her impressive achievements have not only garnered attention but also inspired a new generation of chess enthusiasts in India.
“I’m incredibly excited to be competing in Norway Chess. It’s my first time in the country, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what Norway is like. I can’t wait to experience this unique format and compete in such a prestigious tournament. To all the fans rooting for me, thank you for the love and encouragement; see you all there,” Deshmukh expressed in a statement.
Joining Deshmukh in the tournament is a formidable lineup, including reigning World Blitz champion Bibisara Assaubayeva and defending champion Anna Muzychuk. The competition promises to be fierce, as these elite players vie for top honors in a format that emphasizes gender equality in professional chess.
“India continues to produce outstanding young chess talent, and Divya is a great example of that momentum,” said Benedicte Westre Skog, COO of Norway Chess. “We’re delighted to welcome her to Norway Chess Women and look forward to engaging a growing Indian chess audience as she makes her debut in Oslo.”
The women’s tournament is held alongside the main Norway Chess event, featuring the same format, number of players, playing conditions, and prize fund as the Open competition. This initiative sets a benchmark for gender equality in the sport, showcasing the commitment to inclusivity in chess.
In the Open category, India’s R Praggnanandhaa will also be in action, competing against chess legends such as reigning World Rapid and Blitz champion Magnus Carlsen and Germany’s top-ranked player Vincent Keymer.
As anticipation builds for the tournament, Deshmukh’s participation is expected to draw significant attention, not only from chess fans in India but from around the globe. Her journey reflects the growing prominence of Indian chess on the world stage, and her debut in Norway is sure to be a highlight of the year.
