Andrey Esipenko Wins $25,000 First Prize at Qatar Masters, Arjun Erigaisi Ties for Second Place
Andrey Esipenko emerged victorious at the Qatar Masters, claiming the $25,000 first prize in one of the strongest opens of the year. Despite a valiant effort, Arjun Erigaisi could only secure a draw in his final round game, finishing in a tie for second place. This result means that Fabiano Caruana maintains a slim lead in the 2024 FIDE Circuit.
Nodirbek Abdusattorov, currently third in the Circuit standings, faced an early setback with a loss in the first round. However, he bounced back with a strong performance, scoring 7/9 and tying with Arjun. As the prizes were not shared, Arjun earned $15,000 for his second-place finish on tiebreaks, while Abdusattorov took home $10,000.
The tournament’s A group, which was open to players rated 2300 and higher, featured a nine-round Swiss format and took place in the Torch Ballroom in Doha, Qatar.
In the final round, Arjun needed a win to overtake Caruana in the FIDE Circuit standings. However, he could only manage a draw against Esipenko, who displayed solid defense throughout the game. Despite the result, Arjun’s performance was commendable, with five wins and four draws in the tournament.
With the FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships still to come at the end of the year, the race for the top spot in the Circuit remains intense. The player with the most circuit points at the end of the year will secure the first seat in the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament, which will determine the next world championship challenger.
Other notable performances in the tournament included Reza Mahdavi’s impressive victory over Abdusattorov and Shant Sargsyan’s strong showing in the early rounds. Esipenko’s hard-fought win in the final round secured his first-place finish, while Erigaisi’s determined play kept him in contention until the end.
IM Polina Shuvalova also made her mark by finishing as the highest-placed woman in the final standings, earning $5,000 for her performance.
The Qatar Masters provided thrilling chess action and set the stage for an exciting conclusion to the 2024 FIDE Circuit. With the world championship cycle in full swing, every game and every point count towards the ultimate goal of challenging for the world title.
