Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa Makes History at Norway Chess 2026
NEW DELHI: In a stunning display of skill and determination, 20-year-old Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa has etched his name in chess history by becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious Norway Chess tournament, traditionally dominated by the legendary Magnus Carlsen. The Chennai native’s remarkable journey saw him rise from the bottom of the standings to claim victory in the World No. 1’s own backyard.
After a challenging start, Praggnanandhaa turned the tide in the second half of the tournament, securing two classical wins against Carlsen, a victory over reigning world champion Dommaraju Gukesh, and a decisive final-round win against Germany’s top player, Vincent Keymer. As fellow contenders Wesley So and Alireza Firouzja settled for a draw, the crown found a new home in India, marking a historic moment for Indian chess.
In an exclusive interview with Times of India, Praggnanandhaa reflected on his monumental achievement. “Winning this tournament feels more special for different reasons,” he said. “Being in the last position after Round 6 and then making a comeback is not something that happens often. Beating Magnus twice and winning ahead of him is something I’ve always wanted.”
The young Grandmaster shared the joy of his victory with his family, who have been his steadfast supporters. “My parents are super happy. The last 10 months haven’t gone my way, so they’re thrilled I managed to get this breakthrough,” he said.
Praggnanandhaa also credited his sister, Vaishali, for inspiring him after her recent success in the Women’s Candidates. “Her win certainly helped me get over my own disappointments,” he noted. “It inspires you when someone achieves greatness in your family.”
His mentor, Grandmaster Vaibhav Suri, has played a crucial role in his journey. “Vaibhav is not just a second but also a good friend. He helps me with openings and provides emotional support after games,” Praggnanandhaa explained. “I’m grateful for all the hard work he has done since we started working together.”
Despite facing mixed results over the past year, Praggnanandhaa remained resilient. “There were certainly low periods, but I felt my play was getting better,” he said, emphasizing the importance of overcoming setbacks with the support of his family and trainers.
Looking ahead, Praggnanandhaa confirmed that his points from Norway Chess will count toward the FIDE Circuit, but he is focused on enjoying the game rather than stressing about future competitions. “I just want to have fun, play, and enjoy chess,” he stated.
As he prepares to return to India, Praggnanandhaa plans to celebrate with his family, though he remains committed to his upcoming participation in the FIDE World Team Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships. “I’ll try to get as much rest as possible, but just being with family will already be a celebration,” he said.
Expressing gratitude for the unwavering support from his sponsors, particularly The Adani Group, Praggnanandhaa acknowledged the importance of corporate backing in a player’s journey. “They’ve always supported me without questioning my results, and I’m truly grateful for that,” he concluded.
With this historic win, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa has not only made his mark on the chess world but has also inspired a new generation of players in India, proving that with determination and support, anything is possible.
